Norman Alton Lockman Obituary
Pulitzer Prize winning journalist, Norman A. Lockman, age 66, died at his Wilmington, DE home April 18, 2005 of ALS. He was associate editor of the editorial page of The News Journal and a syndicated columnist for the Gannett News Ser-vice.
He was born in West Chester, PA and reared in Kennett Square by his aunt and uncle, William and Sarah Cramer. He was a 1956 graduate of Kennett High School, attended Penn State and received a Masters of Arts degree from the University of Delaware. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1961-1965, where he edited the Desert Wings at Edwards Air Force Base in CA.
Mr. Lockman's journalism career spanned 50 years from his hometown weekly paper, the Kennett News & Advertiser, to the Wilmington News Journal and the Boston Globe, where he was a political columnist, chief of the State House Bureau, and a member of the Editorial Board. He shared a Pulitzer with 6 others at the Globe in 1984. Thereafter, he returned to The News Journal as managing editor.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia Trainer Lockman; his former wife, Carol Ressler Lockman; and 3 daughters, Holly Quinn and her husband, John, Carey Corbin and her husband, Craig, and Elizabeth Lockman; and 2 grandchildren, Shane Quinn and Sophie Lockman.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 30, at 2:30 pm at the Episcopal Church of Saints Andrew and Matthew, 719 N. Shipley St. (corner of 8th St.), Wilmington, DE.
